The primary goal of this project is to capitalize on the underutilized space surrounding interstates to mitigate carbon emissions. Interstates are a major source of the greenhouse gasses that are causing and compounding climate change. With an abundance of open space. Interstates also provide valuable real estate which, when utilized correctly, can assist in diminishing these emissions.
Secondarily, this project attempts to reallocate ecological value to formerly natural areas which have been effectively erased by highway infrastructure and Its associated activity. Lastly, Terra Machina is a quest for knowledge. As an educational tool, it can be used as a vehicle to learn about possible effective and widely applicable methods to combat climate change. As a conglomeration of tangentially related disciplines and their associated knowledge, we can explore and communicate the possibilities presented by cooperation between designers and scientists. In the case of this project, this collaboration presents itself as a physical manifestation of scientific principles in physical space.
