New Braunfels is located in a unique area of Texas, with two distinct types of ecology - the Blackland Prairie and Edwards Plateau. The Balcones fault line passes through Landa Park creating the aquatic upwelling of the Comal Springs, the largest springs in Texas. This area is located close to the South Texas Plains, which enables an amazing variety of trees - including those of a tropical nature - to grow here.

Starting in 1981, the Guada Coma Garden Club retained botanists to identify the many different species of trees growing in Landa Park. This effort resulted in identification of fifty-four species and the Landa Park Arboretum was dedicated on September 21, 1982. Serving on the first arboretum committee were Joyce Kolodzie, Marie Merrifeld, Mary Kaderli and Dolores Schumann. This organization was instrumental in acquiring a Texas Forest Service grant for a tree inventory and management plan for Landa Park. Today thousands of visitors to the park enjoy an amazing aưay of natural beauty as a result of the efforts of many dedicated New Braunfels citizens who had the determination to highlight and protect this ecological wonder.
